INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Federal regulations require the campus to provide equal access to students with disabilities, including academic accommodations such as these for in-class exams. Exam accommodations can typically include extended time, as well as a quiet test site. Per UCSC’s campus policy, this responsibility falls to you as instructors. When a student is authorized for test accommodations, your responsibilities are described below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Disability Resource Center, 459-2089. Thank you.
- Appropriate testing space (quiet, reduced distraction). Contact the designated staff member in your department who coordinates exams early in the quarter if you need assistance with room and/or proctor arrangements. It is recommended faculty provide student names and exam details to the designee for the entire quarter (rather than one exam at a time). Early communication from faculty to the department designee is crucial.
- Appropriate time extension as designated in the student’s DRC Accommodation Authorization form. Extended time on exams typically refers to an extra 50% (1 ½x) or 100% (2x) to complete a test. For example, if all students receive 60 minutes to complete an exam, a DRC student with 1 ½x would receive 90 minutes.
- Communicate test arrangement details to the student (e.g. the test location site, etc). Faculty may also delegate a contact person such as a T.A. or department designee to convey test details.
- Be available (or designate a TA) for questions during exams, if typically provided to the rest of the class.
- The DRC can provide test scribes or readers, as authorized for students with disability-related needs with advanced notice from you (at least one week prior to exams if possible). Fill out the Scribe/Reader Request Form located on the sidebar of the DRC’s website faculty/staff page: http://drc.ucsc.edu/faculty_staff/. If you do not receive a response within two business days of submitting the online form, please call us.
Note: The DRC does not provide test proctors. Test proctors are not required by law. It is up to you whether or not to provide one (see #1 regarding assistance with proctors).
