Tutoring Fact Sheet
All UCSC students are eligible for weekly tutoring provided by peer tutors in the Learning Support Services (LSS). There is no charge for this service as you have already paid for it through your student fees.
Disability Resource Center (DRC) students are eligible for additional services when authorized by their DRC service coordinator for disability related reasons.
- Register on the Online Tutor Sign-up System(OTSS). Please enter your name into the system before the start of each quarter, if possible. https://eop-apps.ucsc.edu/OTSS/tutorsignup/
- Indicate your tutoring needs on the DRC Service Request Form.
- Sign up for tutoring timeslots on the OTSS start day in the third week of the quarter. If you need to start tutoring earlier than the second week of classes, please contact the DRC to inquire about priority status.
- Identify Yourself. If you are requesting special tutoring services, please tell the LSS staff that you are a DRC client.
- Tutors are provided on a first come, first served basis. It is important to sign up at your earliest opportunity. Timeslots fill quickly.
- What if there is no tutor? In some instances a tutor may need to be recruited —this can take two weeks. If a tutor cannot be found, it may be possible for LSS to hire an advanced student in your class. Contact the DRC or LSS for information
- Be prepared for your tutoring sessions; do the reading and the homework as best you can beforehand.
- Show up for your weekly sessions or you may be dropped.
- Individual Tutoring: If the DRC authorizes you for individual tutoring, you will need to contact the LSS Tutor Coordinator, Rex Chung, 459-3462 or another LSS staff member, 459-4333, to facilitate your two-step sign up process. - Extra hours of tutoring: All students are allowed subject tutoring one hour per week in a small group with up to 4 students. All students are also allowed individual sessions of writing tutoring one hour per week. If you have a disability related need for extra hours of subject or writing tutoring, contact your DRC service coordinator.
- Small group tutoring in addition to MSI: LSS requires that all students in MSI supported classes attend MSI. If you have a disability related need for small group or individual tutoring in lieu or in addition to MSI, please contact the DRC for an exemption.
