Welcome New Students!
Welcome to UCSC. Hopefully most of you attended our annual orientation and have familiarized yourselves with our procedures for obtaining accommodations. If you haven’t already scheduled an appointment to see a Service Coordinator please do so ASAP. Please call 459-2089 to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions regarding accommodations. We are open 8-5 Monday through Friday.
New Academic Accommodations Process
Good news…we have streamlined the academic accommodations process for fall quarter! For example, as soon as you’ve enrolled in your courses, you may submit a Service Request Form (SRF) to the DRC…no need to wait until you’ve attended classes. And you don’t need to come back to the office to pick up your packet…we will send it to you via email.
Here are the *new *steps for requesting accommodations for Fall 2009:
1. Complete the annual, DRC Information Form 2009-2010, with your
updated contact information. This must be done in person in the
office.
2. Submit your SRF in person using the pink, paper version with a
printed copy of your class schedule; or if you have already
completed step one, you may submit an electronic SRF via the DRC
website. http://drc.ucsc.edu/current_students/#a2
3. If you are requesting different accommodations than you’ve used
before, send an email to your service coordinator to confirm
that you are eligible.
4. Allow a 2-3 day turn around; watch your UCSC email account for
an electronic message with PDF attachments of your accommodation
authorization (AA) letters.
5. Use the links to review the fact sheets that pertain to your
accommodations.
6. Print out your generic accommodations authorization letters
(they will list ALL of your ongoing accommodations).
7. Hand deliver the letters to your instructors by the end of the
second week of classes; confirm your SPECIFIC requests for each
class during office hours. Take notes regarding the arrangements
(ex. who will be administering your exams…)
8. Keep in touch with your DRC service coordinator regarding any
concerns that arise during the quarter.
Note: The accommodation letters will have a different look. For example, the “manifestations of disability” section has been eliminated. Thus, we encourage you to share information about your disability and learning process with your instructor.
This fall, only two service coordinators will be available to authorize accommodations. Fortunately, we look forward to welcoming another staff member in time for winter quarter. In the meantime, we ask that if it is not urgent, continuing students wait until the third week of class to schedule an individual appointment. This will allow us to interview the new students and get their accommodations started. Please note that we will be very limited with our ability to serve students on a walk-in basis.
See you soon,
The DRC Staff
If you are in need of accommodations this quarter please complete a Service Request Form ASAP if you haven’t already done so. You will need to come by our office to fill out a new Information Sheet for the year and complete a Service Request Form at the same time.
Tutoring Registration & Sign Ups
*Tutoring*…if you are going to request subject or writing tutors this year…DRC students are encouraged to register NOW at the Learning Support Services (LSS) website. You won’t be able to sign up for the tutoring timeslots until the third week of the quarter…but it will be quick and easy to do if you are already registered in their Online Tutor Sign up System (OTSS). https://eop-apps.ucsc.edu/OTSS/tutorsignup/
All students can sign up for Writing or Subject tutoring sessions on-line at https://eop-apps.ucsc.edu/OTSS/tutorsignup/ You will need your Student ID and date of birth in order to register and access the system. Learning Support Services offers subject tutoring in courses such as Math, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Physics, Psychology, Sociology and many more!
Sign-ups begin on October 6th and will remain open until November 20th. If you anticipate that you will need a tutor this quarter we suggest that you sign up early. Please contact Learning Support Services at 459-4333, or go by their office at the Academic Resources Center (ARCenter) if you need assistance with the on-line tutor sign-up system.
RFB&D Changes
If you have been using RFB&D and would like to continue your membership
you might want to know that there have been some changes. RFB&D is now
offering free memberships with an audio download feature for those with
PC computers.
To sign up for a free membership and use the audio download click here:
http://www.rfbd.org/membership-individual.htm. Please be aware that
RFB&D's new AudioPlus feature does not work with Apple Macintosh
computers or Ipods. RFB&D hopes to make this available in the near
future. In the meantime, you can check this link:
_http://support.rfbd.org/audioplus/faq.htm#q2-3 _for FAQ's about what
computers and playback devices will work with the new AudioPlus feature.
Check Your Final Schedule
We know, we know, it’s way too early to be talking about finals but…once you've enrolled in your Fall courses, be sure to check the Schedule of Classes for your final exam dates and times. With extra time given to some DRC clients for test taking it is not uncommon to have exam time overlap. Contact your service coordinator EARLY in the quarter if you have schedule conflicts.
Part Time Status Forms for Undergrads are due at the Registrar’s Office by Wednesday, October 14, 2008.
If you are enrolled as a full time student and are considering taking 10 or less units this quarter you need to submit a Part- Time Status Form to the Registrar’s office. The deadline is October 15th in order to receive partial reimbursement of your tuition. The Part-Time Status forms are available at the DRC along with the form required by the Registrar’s office. Our office hours are 8-5 Monday through Friday except holidays.
Add/Drop/Swap Classes Ends Wednesday, October 14, 2008. Deadline to
process enrollment transactions.
