Welcome New Students!
Welcome to UCSC. Hopefully most of you attended our annual orientation and have familiarized yourselves with our procedures for obtaining accommodations. If you haven’t already scheduled an appointment to see a Service Coordinator please do so ASAP. Please call 459-2089 to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions regarding accommodations. We are open 9-12 and 1-4 Monday through Friday. If you missed the orientation please review the handout prior to your appointment. Go to http://drc.ucsc.edu
Former Students and Your Records:
To all of the DRC clients who have graduated and are reading this e-note, our apologies. Because of limitations in our database system we are using last year’s mailing list for this initial e-note. But since I have your attention, just a reminder that if you anticipate needing copies of your documentation, authorization for extra time for the GRE or any other post-graduate testing please keep in mind that we keep student records for a period of five years only. After five years those records are destroyed. As a reminder, it is important for you to retain copies of this personal documentation for your own records.
Lost and Found:
A black sweatshirt was left at the DRC Orientation on Tuesday September 25th . Please call 459-2089 to identify.

Remember to attend each one of your classes at least once so that you know what accommodations you will be requesting.

Student Organization:
Slugs with Learning Challenges (SLC) is the only student organization on campus that is registered to help bring awareness and tolerance regarding learning and other disabilities.
The purpose of the organization is to educate our peers, professors and TAs about what it is like to have a learning or other disability, to provide support for students who have learning or other disabilities, and to generate an overall awareness to eliminate stereotypes. SLC welcomes students with disabilities as well as anyone who interacts with students with disabilities and other learning challenges. They have new members with exciting ideas. Please join them.

DRC Drop Box:
Doh! I forgot to pick up my notes at the DRC and now it’s the weekend!!
If you cannot get to our office during business hours there is a small stainless steel drop box located on the wall directly across from the South Entrance door to the Hahn building. The South Entrance is the door closest to the metered parking area. Just give us a call anytime between 9-4 Monday through Friday to request that we put your papers in the box and you can pick them up when it is convenient for you. Now there is no excuse not to review your notes over the weekend!
Check Your Final Schedule:
We know, we know, it’s way too early to be talking about finals but…once you've enrolled in your Fall courses, be sure to check the Schedule of Classes for your final exam dates and times. With extra time given to some DRC clients for test taking it is not uncommon to have exam times overlap. Contact your service coordinator EARLY in the quarter if you have schedule conflicts.
Disability Awareness Month:
October is Disability Awareness Month and as an effort to promote Disability awareness, CCCIL's Young Adult Leadership & Advocacy group is organizing a number of events to take place in Santa Cruz throughout the month of October.
The first of these activities is being launched now - and they would love to have your help!
They are collecting stories and experiences about disability that they would like to use throughout the month and also post on their blog. Please visit their online questionnaire and help them spread the word.
