Student Organization: Slugs with Learning Challenges (SLC) is the only student organization on campus that is registered to help bring awareness and tolerance to learning disabilities.

The purpose of the organization is to educate our peers, professors and TAs about what it is like to have a learning disability, to provide support for students who have learning disabilities, and to generate an overall awareness to eliminate stereotypes. SLC will serve those with learning disabilities as well as anyone who interacts with students with learning disabilities and other learning challenges. Check for dates of meetings/events in
upcoming E-notes.

For any comments, concerns and questions, contact us at via e-mail:
                                   slc.ucsc@gmail.com.

Student Announcement:
Hello!
I am a new grad student in Social Documentation (i.e. Documentary
video) and am doing preliminary research for a short documentary on
students with disabilities at UCSC. I have a physical "disability" myself
that has made school extremely challenging. I believe that some of these
challenges/difficulties are unnecessary and could be minimized if faculty
had a greater level of awareness and sensitivity, and tools for working
with different needs. That is what I am hoping this film will assist with:
developing a greater understanding of the unique challenges of students
with "disabilities."

If you have a "disability" of any type, are a student here at UCSC, and
interested in discussing this project further, please contact me at
rpbrashe@ucsc.edu

Thanks and good luck with school this year!
Regan Brashear

The DRC welcomes our new Reception Manager!
The DRC recently hired a new Reception Manager, Brendan Lynch. We are pleased to have Brendan as part of our staff.  His bio which is on our new website is below:

I've been working as the DRC Reception Manager since Summer of 2006. I'm the first person you speak to on the phone or see when you come through the door. I schedule appointments, check out equipment, and coordinate the notetaker services. My goal is to be welcoming, to encourage you to take advantage of our services and resources, and to make you feel at home at DRC.

Raised in Santa Cruz, I attended local schools and went on to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I majored in Human and Organizational Development and minored in Film Studies. In summers I attended UCSC Summer School and UCSC's Sierra Institute in the Olympic National Wilderness. After college I joined the Peace Corps and served for two years in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau, teaching elementary school, working with disadvantaged and at risk youth as a coach and mentor, and building a community library on my home island. I lived with a native family on the tiny island of Tonoas, located on the Chuuk Lagoon, and I learned to speak Chuukese. During vacations I had the opportunity to travel in the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Taiwan. When my service was completed in November 2005, I explored various American cities before settling back in Santa Cruz. My interests include creative writing, reading, sports, backpacking, scuba diving, and travel. I look forward to working with students and staff at the Disability Resource Center and to serving the UCSC community and its goal of providing diverse populations greater access to Higher Education.
