*Gain Leadership Experience--Become a Student Organization Officer*
Leadership skills are important to potential employers, graduate schools, scholarship and/or internship selection committees. The current officers of Slugs with Learning Challenges (SLC) are about to graduate. Nichol Baxter (President), Rob Davies (Vice President), and Brian Atkinson (Secretary/Treasurer ) are graduating. Scott Rohlf (Project Chair) is willing to continue if he has help from others. Please consider this opportunity. The group made a big impact on campus over the past two years. They received money from SOARS and hosted last year's informative guest speaker. They assisted with DRC orientation for incoming students, and most recently spoke to a general education class to bring awareness and tolerance regarding learning disabilities. Their current project is to educate campus provosts and academic advisers regarding what it is like to experience a learning disability and how to be helpful. If you are interested in being part of Slugs LC...please contact any officer at: slc.ucsc@gmail.com <mailto:slc.ucsc@gmail.com>.
You can also chat with the organization's staff advisor, Peggy Church (DRC Director), for more information.
Many thanks go to the outgoing officers for their dedication and efforts to eliminate stereotypes on our campus regarding learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD and other learning challenges. We will miss you very much. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Nichol, thank you again for your enthusiasm and impetus to get the group started!
Reminder: Pick up Packets/Contact Notetakers
If you have submitted a Service Request Form and have not picked up your packet, please do so ASAP. If testing accommodations are going to be needed, faculty requires a minimum of two weeks notice prior to an exam. If you are unable to come to the DRC during our office hours we would be happy to leave your packet outside the building in our drop box.
Also, please contact your assigned notetakers if you haven’t already done so. If notetakers are contacted after the third week of the quarter, they are only required to provide notes from the time of contact through the remainder of the quarter unless special arrangements are made through your coordinator. If you have notes that need to picked up we can leave those in the drop box as well. Just call our office 459-2089 and leave a message or email your request to drc@ucsc.edu
Reminder: Last day to withdraw
The deadline to drop with a W (Withdraw) notation from a class, except for an emergency reason is Monday, May 14th.

30th Anniversary of SECTION 504
On April 5, 1977, thousands of "the disabled" converged on the offices of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare around the country to demand that the legislation Congress passed 5 years earlier be implemented. In San Francisco they took over the HEW Office and started what became the longest sit-in occupation of a federal building in U.S. history.
At 7:30 A.M. on April 28, 1977 they celebrated victory. The rules implementing Section 504 were signed by HEW Secretary Joseph A. Califano. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil-rights provision. It does not provide funding for any programs or activities; rather, it is a requirement that accompanies federal financial assistance to not-for-profit organizations such as schools and universities. Any not-for-profit organization that receives federal grants - for any purpose - must comply with section 504. Section 504 laid the ground work for the ADA.
